About Us
Akbar’s history began with Mr. A.N. Malhotra, a visionary in the hospitality industry who sought to bring the grandeur of India’s royal past to modern dining. Inspired by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar, renowned for his legendary hospitality, Mr. Malhotra opened the first Akbar restaurant in Manhattan in 1976. His goal was to introduce the refined flavors and regal traditions of Mughlai cuisine to an audience that had yet to experience its richness.
Mr. Malhotra’s experience in the global hospitality industry was extensive. Having played a key role in expanding the prestigious Gaylord brand internationally, he was well-equipped to craft a restaurant that reflected both authenticity and luxury. With his son, Pradeep Malhotra, by his side, Akbar quickly became an institution of fine Indian dining in New York City.
But the story of Akbar Restaurant goes beyond the Malhotra family’s journey—it is deeply intertwined with a culinary legacy that dates back to 16th-century India. Emperor Akbar, known not just for his governance but also for his exquisite taste, brought together the finest chefs of his time to create dishes that were as opulent as his court. His kitchens produced aromatic biryanis, rich kormas, and delicate kebabs, all of which remain signature items on Akbar’s menu today.
The Malhotras took this inspiration to heart, sourcing authentic spices and time-honored recipes from India. To ensure an unparalleled dining experience, they brought in expert chefs from Bombay who specialized in traditional Mughlai cooking methods. This dedication to authenticity helped introduce Indian fine dining to the United States, at a time when such flavors were virtually unknown to American diners.
As Akbar flourished, the family expanded its reach. Today, Akbar operates in Garden City, NY, and Edison, NJ, carrying forward the same dedication to quality and tradition. While Mr. and Mrs. Pradeep Malhotra oversee the Edison location, the Garden City branch is led by Meena Malhotra, alongside Sandeep Soni, Director of Banquets & Catering. Under their leadership, Akbar continues to be a destination for both intimate dining and grand celebrations.
Through decades of excellence, Akbar has remained a bridge between past and present—offering guests the same royal flavors once reserved for emperors, in a setting fit for today’s discerning diners. Whether you are joining us for an unforgettable meal or a memorable celebration, we invite you to experience the timeless elegance of Akbar.
